Digital Mi'kmaq
Sep 29, 2018 - Nov 3, 2018
Digital Mi’kmaq is looking for 26 ENGINEERS to help facilitate our programming for our new Engineer Clubs running for the month of October (and November 3 due to Thanksgiving) in Mi’kmaq communities across Nova Scotia.
There are 13 Mi’kmaq Communities in Nova Scotia. So we are looking ideally for 2 engineers per location.
These Engineering Clubs will run Saturdays from 10 to 2:30 pm and will be based on Mi’kmaq reserves across the province. They will operate out of the newly established Digital Mi’kmaq Maker Labs in each community.
The dates for these introductory workshops and engineering programs will be:
- October 13
- October 20
- October 27
- November 3
The locations of Mi’kmaq communities are in most cases, beside or close to major cities or towns and cover the entire province. A map has been provided to help people determine what location works best for them given the driving distances involved.
Working as educational facilitators the program will be supported by Digital Mi’kmaq staff and a teachers aide from each reserve based school. The introductory engineering program will involve 32 students in each and every community. The students participating in the engineering clubs encompass Mi’kmaq students from Grades 4 to Grade 12 for a total of 32 in each location.
The introductory engineering curriculum has been completed and all materials purchased to facilitate the delivery of this hands on program.
All students have digital devices. The activities in the curriculum have been developed with the ages of all of these students in mind.
On Saturday, September 29 Digital Mi’kmaq will run a training program for all interested participants starting at 10 am. Lunch will be provided. The location in Halifax is currently being finalized. On September 29th, we will be set up so as to accommodate those unable to attend in person for the training virtually as well. Final Details on the location and how to connect virtually will be forwarded to those interested in participating.
The purpose of these newly established Engineering Clubs are to introduce and inspire Mi’kmaq Children towards engineering and forms a part of the Digital Mi’kmaq’s enriched STEM focused initiative. Please see www.digitalmikmaq.com for further details on the program. It commenced last Spring and is a comprehensive program that involves enriched curriculum, after school clubs and programs.
