Sep 16, 2025 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM

Date & Time: Sep 16, 2025, 11:30 AM in Halifax

Description
Randy is an engineer and the Director of the Engineering Access Program (ENGAP) in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba. ENGAP is a successful program in Canada, graduating hundreds of Indigenous students into the world of engineering.

This session will discuss the historic and contemporary role engineering has played in Indigenous communities and how we as engineers can move forward in a spirit of reconciliation. The session will talk about what exactly is meant by decolonization and why we need to address this issue. In order to better understand this role, we will look at some contemporary engineering issues in Indigenous communities and review some traditional Indigenous design. The session will also talk about United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and how that might affect engineering projects in the future.

This session held on Zoom has a capacity limit of 500 attendees, a recording of the session will be made available on PEGNL’s learning platform.
