Join Leslie Bateman P.Eng., Colleen Rodgerson P.Eng. and Darrell Thompson P.Eng. as they review the engineering requirements pertaining to hoists under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. This webinar is intended to create awareness in the engineering community about engineering work associated with hoist design and assessment, for hoists used on land or mounted on fishing vessels. For hoists mounted on vessels, Naval Architects and boat builders may also need to know this information when considering vessel stability.

OHS Compliance Officers are finding hoists in workplaces that do not comply with the regulations under the OHS Act. When use of equipment is not supported by manufacturer’s specifications, this is a red flag for OHS Officers. It can indicate that the equipment was not commercially manufactured and that there is no information available to workers that explains how to use the equipment safely. In the absence of manufacturer’s specifications, OHS regulations require employers to have these specifications produced by a professional engineer who is registered as a member or licenced to practice under the Engineering Profession Act.

For compliance, an Engineer must certify that an employer’s intended use of hoist equipment provides an adequate level of safety, and the Engineer must provide specifications, including any precautions that are necessary to maintain the hoist in a state that is safe for use. This certification must factor in the regulatory requirements for hoists under the Occupational Safety General Regulations and the requirements for certification under the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations.
