Daniel Bourque has been active in the building engineering industry since the end of his university studies, first as a design-build mechanical contractor, and now as a consulting engineer. He has extensive experience in building modeling and building simulation in the industrial and commercial sectors. If you are walking through a building with him, chances are he will be looking at the ceiling, because “that’s where the action is”.

Benjamin Corkum, EIT, Engineering & Construction, Heritage Gas Limited

Ben Corkum graduated from Dalhousie University’s Environmental Engineering Co-op program in the spring of 2018 and is now employed as an Engineer-In-Training for Heritage Gas, Nova Scotia’s natural gas utility. In this role, he is responsible for a variety of tasks that include (but are not limited to) hydraulic modelling of the pipeline network, procurement of construction materials, conducting engineering field audits, material tracking/traceability, and product testing/approvals. Ben is on the cusp of achieving his P.Eng. designation this summer, and he looks forward to sharing his experiences with Nova Scotia’s B.Eng. and E.I.T. processes.

 

Alexander de Sousa, P.Eng., Civil Engineer, ABLE Engineering Services Inc.

A dynamic project leader and dedicated Professional Engineer with over 10 years of engineering and project management experience in the civil engineering and construction industries.  Alex is dedicated to the betterment of the profession and serves the public through various volunteering efforts such as serving on the Emerging Professionals Committee and other boards.  Client-focused and passionate about determining economical, sustainable solutions while having a reputation for delivering on objectives and exceeding expectations.  Areas of competency include municipal infrastructure planning & design, subdivisions/land development, water & wastewater treatment, cost estimating, budget preparation, and business case analysis.

 

Colin Dickson, MBA, P.Eng., Director Atlantic Canada ITEP Canada

As a professional engineer and 1988 graduate of the Technical University of Nova Scotia in Industrial Engineering I have enjoyed a dynamic and evolutionary career path including Marine Systems Engineering Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, consulting engineer with four firms (presently with Tower Engineering Professionals), project manager with a real estate developer, a technical expert with an industry trade association - Cement Association of Canada, business developer and a lecturer in the Dalhousie Faculty of Engineering. I am a strong believer and proponent of lifelong learning and continued professional development to ensure that engineers are proficient and competent in the engineering they practice.  I have come to appreciate that engineers are educated and gain knowledge through experience to solve problems deploying applied science, sustainable technology, human resources and their strong leadership and management skills are welcomed in the public and private sectors.

Jeff graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering. Since 2010 Jeff has worked as a Project Engineer with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans Canada (DFO) where he oversees the management of capital projects. Jeff is a Certified Energy Manger and over the past few years has been working on initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at DFO facilities including completing strategic energy management plans and implementing energy efficiency projects.

Nathan manages the Halifax Partnership’s Connector Program which helps recent grads and newcomers to the city meet key professionals in their industry.  The program actively supports domestic and foreign-trained engineers who are looking to build their engineering networks in Nova Scotia.

Amy Pellerin, P.Eng., Senior Development Manager, Natural Forces Wind Inc.

A professional engineer, Amy has been working in the renewable energy sector across Canada for nearly 10 years, with the majority of her time spent with Natural Forces; a privately-owned renewable energy company with its head office in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As Senior Development Manager, Amy manages the development and permitting of Natural Forces’ utility scale solar, wind and small hydro projects and has been instrumental in the successful deployment of 15 renewable energy projects.

Amy’s focus and expertise are in permitting, real property, Rightsholder consultation, stakeholder consultation, and due diligence.

 

Krista Phillips P.Eng., PMP, MBA, Climate Change & Clean Transportation Strategist, Nova Scotia Department of Energy & Mines

Krista received her Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick in 2000 and her MBA-Leadership from Dalhousie University in 2020. She worked in the engineering consulting field for 15 years with a focus on water and wastewater systems, and environmental remediation projects across Canada. In 2015, she joined the Nova Scotia Department of Energy and Mines as a senior engineer, where she is leading the province’s transition to electric and clean transportation.

 

Katherine Risley, BBA, FEC (Hon.), Partner, Meridia Recruitment Solutions

Katherine Risley brings more than a decade of recruiting experience to her role as Partner with Meridia Recruitment Solutions. She specializes in recruiting top talent for Engineering roles at employers throughout Atlantic Canada. In 2019, Katherine was selected by Engineers Canada to receive an honorary Engineers Canada Fellowship, in recognition of the substantial efforts she has made over the years to improve female participation in the engineering profession in Nova Scotia.

 

Janice Zinck, Director of Green Mining Innovation at Natural Resources Canada

  • Janice leads a diverse team of approximately 80 research engineers and scientists that develop and assess technologies and approaches to help improve the environmental performance and competitiveness of the mining industry, particularly in areas such as water, energy and waste management. 

  • She also leads several major programs such as Strategic and Critical Minerals, Battery R&D and a program to extract minerals and metals from mine waste, called Mining Value from Waste, to help transition to a circular and low carbon economy.

  • Fun fact:  Janice can be found at the Canadian Museum of S&T as a Super Hero of Industry – Lady Chromite.
