Take Our Kids to Work Day

Take Our Kids to Work Day, taking place on Wednesday, November 6th, 2019, is an annual event where students step into their future for a day and get a glimpse into the working world. The day involves students in Grade 9 spending the day in the workplace of a parent, relative, friend or volunteer host, where they experience and learn about the world of work.

  

Sample Day for an Aspiring Engineer!

 

9:00 am Meet student(s) at front entrance

 

9:00-9:15 am Tour of the office—Washrooms, emergency exits, muster station, kitchen, etc.

 

9:15-10:00 am Introductions, overview of the company, and job responsibilities

 

10:00-11:00 am Icebreaker Activity

Example: Scavenger hunt

Provide a floor plan/people’s office and give them broad questions to ask engineers (What is Frankie’s favourite part of his job? What project is Nick working on today? What is Kathy’s biggest priority item?

Take time to review the answers with the students. Did any surprise you?

 

11:00 am-12:00 pm Follow along with your day. What does your typical work day look like?

 

12:00 pm-1:00 pm Lunch. (Students can come with a packed lunch if not provided)

 

1:00-1:30 pm Interview an Engineer

      How do you become an engineer? What do engineers do? Students can come up with their own questions

 

1:30-2:00 pm Try out life as an engineer.

Provide a sample activity. Examples: Drawing in CAD, solving a problem, performing simple drawing take-offs

 

2:00-2:30 pm Watch your favourite TED Talk, Techsploration video, etc.

 

2:30-3:00 pm Prepare a social media post. Tag the company, take a group photo, #EngineersNovaScotia

 

3:00 pm Return student to parents (happy & educated!)
