JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties:

• We are seeking an experienced and practical electrical engineer with a background in protection & control, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial equipment to support BC Hydro’s thermal generation. In this position, you will provide field-focused technical leadership to crews and management for gas plant equipment and associated substation and auxiliary equipment. As part of the Vancouver Island, Thermal, and Non-Integrated Region within Stations Field Operations, this position will be based out of the Island Generation facility, located on northern Vancouver Island. The position is headquartered in Campbell River, a beautiful community with small-city amenities and exceptional access to outdoor recreation.
• Provide engineering field support for the Island Generation facility, and other thermal generating stations as appropriate.
• Provide technical leadership and practical field guidance to maintenance crews, operations, and management for troubleshooting, urgent equipment issues, forced outage support, and return-to-service decisions.
• Review, revise, and make technical recommendations on preventative maintenance programs, maintenance instructions, corrective actions, and maintenance strategy improvements.
• Support equipment condition assessments, inspection and test data review, and Reliability Centered Maintenance strategies for generating station equipment.

• Support asset management, capital planning, plant improvement projects, and equipment modifications by providing maintainability, reliability, and other technical input.
• Engage with external contractors for technical support as needed to support operational objectives.
• Participate in and lead root cause analysis for equipment failures and recurring issues.
• Maintain engineering records and controlled documents, including drawing revisions, change management records, AutoCAD files, and Engineer of Record (POR) documentation.
• Manage outages & projects, including scheduling, budgeting, engineering coordination, contractor oversight, and maintenance personnel.
• Maintain and support DCS control systems through troubleshooting, programming, system maintenance, and control logic updates.
• Participate in emergency response and possible plant supervisory call-out rotation, providing after-hours operational support as appropriate.
• Site NERC/WECC lead interfacing with the BC Hydro Compliance Team and external stakeholders as required. Overall, the Field Engineer provides practical technical leadership, working closely with crews, managers, contractors and other business partners to support safe, reliable plant operation.

Qualifications:

• Graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; with background in protection & control (P&C) and combined cycle facility operations.
• Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
• Demonstrated technical knowledge of thermal power generation, protection & control, industrial maintenance, and equipment reliability.
• The ability to provide technical direction to crews, engineers, and other technical support staff.
• The ability to analyze complex technical issues, interpret inspection and test data, and develop practical recommendations.
• Well-developed analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
• The ability to communicate effectively with internal and external groups to gather information, resolve issues, and support sound technical decisions. *Understanding of Pressure piping and vessel design, maintenance and compliance to codes and standards and/or Rotating equipment and related engineering/technical knowledge (vibration, lube, thermography).
• Proven ability to work well with crews, peers, and cross-functional teams.
• Experience with both thermal and hydro-electric generation would be an asset.

• Please note that the following must be maintained in good standing as a condition of continuous employment: - Driver's License Type = Class 5 - P.Eng.: Professional Engineer = In Good Standing This position is headquartered in Campbell River, BC, but travel to other locations may be required periodically. The work environment is heavy industrial indoors and outdoors, where PPE is required to be worn. This position may be filled as a Senior Engineer with 8 or more years of relevant engineering experience, or as an Intermediate Engineer with 4 or more years of relevant engineering experience, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. The terms of the secondment will not change the material terms of employment with BC Hydro.
