JOB DESCRIPTION
BC Hydro is embarking on an exciting and transformative infrastructure project with the development of the new 500 kV North Coast Transmission Lines that will strengthen grid reliability and deliver more clean energy to support the region’s growth. The project includes building new high-voltage lines and upgrading existing ones to increase capacity and support growing electricity needs in the region. This major investment will deliver clean, reliable power to communities and industries, enabling sustainable economic growth. We’re looking for three (3) experienced professionals to join our Transmission Electrical Design team in a senior role. As part of the Transmission Design Team, you will help plan, design, and deliver this significant infrastructure project
Duties:
* Conduct electrical studies related to the design of high voltage transmission lines including, but not limited to, grounding system design, step and touch potentials calculations, AC interference with pipelines/railways, lightning protection, electrical safety, and EMF analysis.
* Work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to design transmission lines rated at 60 kV to 500 kV. * Manage medium and large-sized projects and work packages, write technical specifications and standards, and prepare estimates.
* Prepare, review, and sign the study reports and drawings.
* Provide technical and site support during the installation, commissioning and maintenance phases. * Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
* Review the work of the consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
* Impart engineering knowledge and encourage the professional development of engineers as well as coaching and mentoring of junior staff is a key responsibility in this role
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's or higher academic degree in Electrical engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
* Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C (EGBC).
* A minimum of 8 years (Senior Engineer) experience with a minimum of 2 years in transmission line design experience in the electric utility industry. Candidates with fewer qualifications and/or experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a lower level position.
* A commitment to ongoing personal development and participation in professional societies.
* Excellent leadership, communications, technical writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
* Experience working in multi-disciplinary project teams, preferably as the lead engineer or project engineer coordinating resources and managing relationships.
Preference will be given to candidates who have some experience and knowledge of one or more of the following:
* Experience with applicable computer applications such as SES-CDEGS and EMTP-RV.
* Experience in electrical studies related to the design of grounding systems, lightning protection, insulation coordination, electromagnetic fields (EMFs), or AC interference.

Flexible work model role definitions

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.
IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
