Mechanical Designer

GN Thermoforming Equipment located in Chester, Nova Scotia, Canada has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Designer.  The Mechanical Designer is required to create new and/or modify existing models and documentation that relate to the mechanical side of the development or improvement of GN thermoforming equipment.     


  1. The conception of new processes and machinery as they pertain to the strategic developmental goals of the company.
  2. To keep abreast of new developments pertaining to industrial machine design and specifically thermoforming to ensure GN incorporates the latest technology.  This requires maintaining a network of industry, customer, and technical resources required for information and collaboration.  Other methods include reading available periodicals, web search, trade shows, and industry networking.
  3. The design of the associated mechanical components for the above related projects.  Designs to be reliable, cost effective, and safe.
  4. To solicit input from the entire GN team through the project life cycle
  5. Functional specification development in conjunction with internal and external customers.
  6. Perform Technical feasibility studies, provide accurate time and budget estimates, and monitor project progress accordingly.
  7. To diligently monitor project progress versus the estimates, for budgets and goal completion dates.
  8. The provision of accurate and timely feedback on project performance.
  9. Create or modify detail & assembly drawings using computer aided drafting or 3-D modeling software.
  10. Create or modify schematics (pneumatic, cooling)
  11. Act as a leader for assigned projects, drive projects to completion.
  12. Keep written information related to GN equipment up to date (manuals, instructions, checklists, etc.)
  13. Assist CAD Technicians in developing design models.
  14. Complete all documentation (ECN's, NDR's) related to the release or modifications of documents controlled by Engineering.
  15. Works as per schedule provided by the Engineering Manager.
  16. Achieves goals and objectives set together with Engineering Manager.
  17. Other duties and projects as deemed necessary or as assigned by Management.

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent background through applicable experience.
  • Analytical and creativity skills and an appreciation of manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Proficiency with 3-D modeling software (SolidWorks would be an asset)
  • Working knowledge of Regulatory Compliance Standards (CSA/CE).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).



  • Most of the tasks will be performed in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Some time spent on the Production floor.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities,
  • Occasional travel to offsite and customer locations may be required.
  • Willing to work flexible hours when called upon, including overtime and shift work when required.
