What you can expect in a typical day
Are you an engineer who enjoys working on capital projects? If you are, we are looking for Project
Engineers to join our Engineering Services team. The Engineering Services team is responsible for all
engineering services required for the approximately 200 projects that are undertaken each year at our
refinery in Saint John, NB, as well as land and marine terminals. As a Senior Project Engineer, you will
work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment using your engineering and design skills to
provide oversight for engineering scopes on projects. You will also ensure that all work is compliant
with design drawings and specifications as well as applicable codes, standards, and legal
requirements. This position requires that you periodically spend time in the field, so you must be willing
and able to wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with engineering disciplines, project managers and business unit operations / technical stakeholders for timely investigation, resolution and alignment on technical issues and design decisions.
  • Hold internal and or external engineering resources accountable to engineering deliverable schedule, effort hour/cost and quality commitments. Engage project managers and business unit operations/stakeholders in mitigation and deliverable prioritization efforts as required
  • Work with Engineering Services team members to ensure all engineering work is compliant with design drawings, specifications, and applicable codes and standards; analyze to verify there are no conflicts between disciplines. All projects must be fit-for-purpose.
  • Oversee the development of engineering scopes throughout the varying phases of the project lifecycle, including the corresponding budgets, effort estimates, and schedules, and any associated change management.
  • Support development of and execute against defined engineering resourcing strategies, upholding the responsibilities of the varying parties (internal and external) in the completion of the work and escalating as appropriate
  • Lead and participate in technical review meetings, project and design reviews. Oversee the preparation of calculations, engineering design drawings, technical reports, specifications, and effort / material take off estimates.
  • Communicate to appropriate stakeholders on project progress and/ or resolution of key issues
  • Compilation and coordination of engineering scope packages to support the bidding of engineering services to external providers
  • Mentoring of other Project Engineering team members on best practices, problem solving strategies and stakeholder engagement / management
  • Review / check Project Engineering and Engineering management deliverables for compliance against internal guidelines and standards
  • Review submitted proposals by external service providers and make recommendation to business leadership on the preferred provider for the work
  • Work closely with Project Managers and Engineering Managers to identify any issues with compliance, execution, risk management frameworks, and project close-out requirements.
  • Oversee engineering RFIs disposition during construction phase.
  • Coordinate the engineering close out process for projects in responsibility

  • Able to articulate technical concepts and other project information in a clear, concise way.

  • Able to influence without authority and lead alignment amongst various internal organizations.
  • Strong ability to communicate, in writing and verbally, through various Microsoft tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.
  • Disciplined documentation practices; write technical documentation and reports; work with Documentation Team to ensure most recent information, e.g. as-built drawings, revised technical specifications, are sent to them.
  • Able to make decisions based on sound business judgment and engineering requirements.
  • Ability to stay within budget and meet deadlines.
  • This position will require you to be in the field periodically so you must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and climb heights, while wearing all required PPE.

Travel

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Education and experience

  • University degree in engineering
  • Knowledge of complex design engineering concepts, practices, and procedures; including the interdependencies, methodologies and responsibilities of the varying design engineering disciplines (Process, Mechanical, Piping. CSA, Electrical and Instrumentation). Preference for discipline experience in developing engineering deliverables in FEED and Detailed Design phases
  • Minimum 12 years of engineering experience on capital projects in the oil and gas, power or heavy industry sectors.
  • Experience working in engineering design using AutoCAD, MicroStation an asset.
  • Experience overseeing or managing other aspects of project execution – materials management, contracts management, construction management/field engineering, commissioning is an asset.
  • Experience working within an owners organization, either within project development /management or operations is an asset
  • P.Eng. designation is an asset.
  • PMP or other project management designation is an asset.
