Sr Project Engineer, Improve Plant- Mulgrave, Nova Scotia

Are you passionate about working with one of the world’s leading producers of essential nutrients like vitamins, carotenoids, nutraceuticals and nutritional lipids; as well as solutions for the feed, food, pharmaceutical and personal care industries? 

DSM produces MEG-3 fish oils that meet or exceed worldwide government regulations and guidelines for contaminants, offering safe, high-quality omega-3s EPA and DHA. Our algal oils are produced from start to finish in a controlled environment, and provide a natural, sustainable and vegetarian alternative to fish oil.  

The Sr Project Engineer, Improve Plant will be responsible for improving the performance of the plant by developing and executing improvement projects successfully, while working with a team of project engineers utilizing good engineering competence and standards.

The facility in Mulgrave, NS is the world leader in omega3 manufacturing. It is a growing facility in which a variety of products for pharma, food, and the dietary supplements industry is produced, starting from crude fish oil as a raw material.

Like DSM, the site takes its environmental impact very seriously. All of our heat is generated from 100% renewable fuel sources. In addition, all of the byproducts are valorized locally (composting, biogas production) and excess biofuel is sold as a renewable fuel source.

What can you expect in your work?  No day is the same and you will be working in a dynamic work environment.  You will be responsible to: 

  • Initialize and manage improvements to product and process on site aimed at cost reduction, improving asset utilization and developing the site in accordance with business needs
  • Identify opportunities for process or operational improvement
  • Per site priorities, develop and execute projects in compliance with SHE, cGMPs and good engineering practices.  This would include budgeting, scheduling and handover to the end user
  • Support other departments, including production, QA and Safety
  • Participate in or lead Process Safety studies and Risk Assessments
  • Lead and mentor project engineers
  • Support the Improve Plant Manager with managing CAPEX project program
  • Manages changes through MOC process
  • Display and promote positive safety behaviors at all times ; Work in a SHE responsible manner and report all incidents

What we like to see in your experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline; Chemical Engineering or Mechanical preferred
  • P. Eng. (Professional Engineer) licensure  required
  • Project management skills
  • Must have at least 5 years of engineering experience, including project management and process design
  • Good mechanical skills as applied to equipment and machinery on site
  • Advisory and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of production processes and Lean Six Sigma practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a supervisory or leadership capacity
