Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia - World of Choices Event - Dartmouth

May 23, 2018 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

At Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia, we are planning an exciting new “World of Choices” event happening on May 16th and May 23rd at the NSCC Ivany Campus in Dartmouth from 10am – 2pm.

The event is essentially a new spin on a career exploration day. Grade 9 students have identified the careers they’d like to explore at this event and engineer was one of the top identified!

We are currently looking for mentors (engineers) who are interested in talking to students about their awesome jobs.

Mentors will make short (15-20 minutes) presentations to groups which includes: insight into what they really do, what they like/dislike about their career, some career myth-busting, and some insight into their educational path etc. Students will also get to ask questions (10 minutes). Mentors would be speaking to 5 different groups of students over the course of the day. Each session is just 30 minutes.

World of Choices

In this new JA program targeting youth in Grade 9, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with possible educational futures, while learning about and challenging myths about various careers. They will learn what job opportunities exist right here in Nova Scotia and be inspired by a range of mentors from all corners of industry. The program is both a professional mentorship strategy as well as a labour attachment initiative.

Outcomes

The program is designed to help youth understand industry and labour market trends and become proactive and confident about a future career. Outcomes include:

  1. Becoming empowered to meet the challenges of today’s working world
  2. Preparing for adult financial decisions related to independent living
  3. Capitalizing on career opportunities in emerging, tradition and non-traditional fields
  4. Discovering associated educational opportunities to ensure success
  5. Finding mentors and developing networks within a desired profession or field
