Presentation Description:

Dr. Hany El Naggar, P.Eng, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Civil Engineering Department of Dalhousie University has undertaken several laboratory and field demonstration projects on Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) materials manufactured locally by Halifax C&D Recycling Ltd. The purpose of the work is to characterize the engineering properties of these local materials relative to exiting published properties for materials produced elsewhere and to advance the innovative use of the materials in civil engineering projects. The presentation will provide the procedures data and outcomes of several field studies and demonstration projects evaluating the use of TDA as a stress reduction fill.  Several additional engineering demonstration projects are in progress including the use of TDA as thermal insulation and frost protection layer as subgrade material under Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) and as a subgrade fill and thermal insulation layer under a newly constructed commercial building.
